Many times throughout this build, I found myself feeling frustrated and overwhelmed; we are planning for this to be our "forever" home (I hope) I wanted it to have a timeless feel.
A Lot of my decisions were made with that in mind. Will I still like it when I'm 80?....will it need much updating in the future and will it serve us well.
I listed in a journal all my favorite things I like in a home that make me happy-
- Vintage
- soft
- quirky
- art
- music
- places to entertain
- places to hide (down the road I will be sharing with you a very special place we have in our home....that is hidden...just for the grand-kids...that is....if you can keep a secret.=)
- organized
- bright
I then took that list and combined it with materials in our budget that gave me that feeling....hoping to create a "timeless" home just for us.
That is how you to can create a timeless home for you....because no matter what happens in trends etc....you will still love your home because it is what you love...hence....Timeless.
Now that our home is mostly finished.... I will be sharing different areas of our home. My hope is that you find something of valve that you could use in your decision making for your own home.

First up- Kitchen Pantry. 5 x 6
Color- Milk and Cream- Walls- Swiss Coffee, Trim- polar bear
I gave it that name because while discussing the color I wanted for our home with the painter...I used the analogy of milk and cream. I'm a dairyman daughter and there were many nights I carried a bucket of milk home.....there is nothing better than scooping cream off the top of fresh milk.
I wanted that look for my walls.....hence Milk and Cream.
I wanted my pantry to be opened to the kitchen for three reasons-
- if it had a door, I know I will junk it up....it's good to be honest with yourself when planning a home. (smile)
- I wanted to make it feel more approachable for my family....more help yourself, than ask for permission...a door generally makes you think to ask to open.
- I didn't want the microwave in the main body of the kitchen.
- Top drawers are for spices
- Middle drawer for boxed goods
- bottom drawer - snack for the grand-kids
- Behind the doors- can goods using this system-
This part of the pantry I planned all around Danny- he loves to fix snacks throughout the day (hot-dogs)
and in all our other homes he would leave a trail. (sorry Danny)
I would be gone and come home and know exactly what he fixed for himself. Drawers left open, microwave tray hot-dog juicy (I say this with love...I 'm by no means perfect=)
Plus we could live in a house for years and he still has a hard time finding things....here is my solution.
- top drawer flatware-
- middle drawer- bread drawer
- bottom drawer- cooking gift bags, gift bread pans; basically things that I can use to wrap up food and give as a gift.
- self closing drawers....all he has to do it get it half way (smile) and the drawer will take over. I have actually wounded myself and past drawers because of their open state.
- I think I could do a whole stand up comic set on why men leave doors and drawers open. Happy Day!
- small plates and napkins close by....no reason to put that raw hot dog on the tray. (all with love)
- peanut butter, butter, tooth picks (soon to be in the little mason jar)
- the trash compactor is to the right....12 inches away (smile)
I planned this pantry around the way we live....
oh... as a note....as of yet I have not bought anything new for the pantry storage. All containers- just using what I had...hence the miss-matched jars and baskets....but I'm totally okay with that! Actually I like miss-matched.
On the wall that you see from the kitchen I used all my stash of glass containers, the wall to the right....my stash of rubber maid. (smile)
This little set up is right next to Dan's microwave/snack area....again...just a sweet little thought ....if you have something to chop...here is a really nice bread board for you to use. (Oh man....I really do love my guy, smile)
Because we were living out of a suit case for over 120 days....(thankful for children who let us stay with them and the cabin =)
organizing the pantry was pretty easy....I didn't have any food to add to it. (kind of the best way to do it, smile) Just adding items as the recipe calls for it. I did purchase a few pantry staples, flour, sugar, salt etc....but generally I'm just waiting until I need it.
- the large class canister holds copper cookie cutters
- large basket- for item that are a little "ugly" but needed. (smile)
Like I said earlier, just using what I already had...perhaps down the road I will change these out to glass to match the other side...but for now...I'm perfectly okay using what I have!
Using lots of things from my old pantry- It might be fun to check out my pantry from Catheys Valley- Pantry makeover- one roll of wallpaper and a quart of paint.
The top basket hold potatoes; It is lined with burlap and a fruit liner.
- counter tops- fantasy white quartzite with a mitered edge.

- bead board backing on walls.
- Hardware- Top knobs
- paint- Kelly Mo0re- using paint code from Home depot-Walls- Swiss coffee -trim polar bear.
I'm sure the longer we live here this pantry will evolve...but for now....I'm just super excited to have a pantry!
