Hello there! I'm back with another quick update on Poppy Hill. This week marks the day when all the dry wall has been installed! Happy Day....Waiting for inspections and then taping and texture is next.
This stage of building is always so interesting to me....when everything is pretty much white....I notice the shadows and light so much more....this stage actually helps to me visualize how my design ideas will come to play.
This home is anything but square....and I mean that in a good way....So many shapes, highs and lows.
Due to the slope of the roof...there are many little storage area (hence the little doorways)
This will be the kids secret room ....so I won't disclose the location. (you will need a secret code to get in =) I plan to make the little cubicles,a special little hide out place....the center opening will end up being a stage.
All the white in the house...really makes the green stand out!
The golf course is interwoven through out the hills between hills and homes.
Our Home is getting so close to being finished...that it seems like it will be forever before it is done....you know so close you can taste it but...yet so far away!
This afternoon I was trying to remember all the homes that I have lived in....and I just can't remember how many....I'm thinking over 33.
Since we have been married....that would be 13....this one is lucky 14! (wow that was close....this house was almost 13)
I feel like an expert of sorts in putting a home together...not because I'm highly trained .... I'm an expert because I've had practice in 13 homes so far!
"An expert is a person who has made all the mistakes that can be made in a very narrow field."
-Niels Bohr
I'm pretty sure I've made every design "faux pas" know to man....pink sofas, crazy wallpaper, wrong color paint, arrangement too crazy....etc. etc. But I also believe....I have learned from all these "mistakes" - I hate to call them mistakes....I like to think of them as a social experiments.... How much will my family put up with (smile)
Designs not of my choice that I had to make a home around- rainbow shag carpet, green army sofa, avocado colored refrigerator, the rat house, smoke house, flooded basement, closets for bedrooms, etc. etc etc.
I think I moved our furniture around so much while my kids were growing up...I'm pretty sure they thought something was wrong if I hadn't move anything in a week. (I became an expert in moving the piano by myself....my younger self.)
and here we are...just about to finish this home! Happy Day!
The dry wall is almost done...just one more room....The house is a maze of scaffolding inside and out.
I don't know how they do it....I can't watch...one missed step...30 feet down.
Remember this tiny bath? It is always amazing to me to see the transformation as the dry wall goes on. At this stage you start to get an idea how and where the light will be. I was getting a little worried about the "light" or the lack there of....but, happy day...the light is awesome in this house!
Upstairs vanity area- this is one half of a jack and Jill bathroom- which consist of 3 rooms- vanity and toilet, shower, vanity and toilet. Mirror images of each other.
Small bathrooms can be a design and decorating challenge, but I believe with the right combination of fixtures, surfaces, colors, decor and lighting, it's possible to create the illusion of a much larger space.
This is my guest bathroom inspiration board.
I actually love decorating bathrooms.... I like to add decorating elements that are a little on the "risky" side. Because this room is so small it won't take much to change the look of the room, as long as the main features are timeless and neutral ....everything else can be changed out ....as I grow tried of it. (smile)
Create a neutral color palette to form the base theme of your bathroom.
Utilize texture and pattern in neutral tones to add creativity and depth.
Remember that the color white is associated with cleanliness. (I love white....pops of color can change from season to season.)
adding fun lighting is always a plus!
Vintage finds in a small bath add just the right amount of happy. Remember that fun mirror I found months ago?
This mirror will be in the guest bathroom. (not the cow picture...Gilda is at the cabin) I have some original art by my sister for the bathroom. Sweet Happy Day!
This is the back wall to my kitchen, looking at where the stove top/hood wall will be. No upper cabinets. The arched door on the right is where the pantry will be, the left is the mud room.
The wall to the left, will house the refrigerator and floor to ceiling cabinets and a couple open shelves ....the wall to the right, is where the sink will sit...no upper cabinets.
In the center will be a kitchen island...4 x 8
Here are a few inspiration photos....(while I was deciding the flow of the kitchen I took into account how I cook....my design may seem odd, but over the years I have kind of figured out how I best work in a kitchen.)
no upper cabinets- just on one wall
microwave and small appliances in pantry
open upper shelving in pantry .....lower closed storage
dish pantry on left wall-
using mostly drawers
two ovens...across from each other.
one sink....
and a trash compactor...(the trash compactor is a luxury....we had one in CV and man, how I miss that thing!)
no pantry door (less likely to make it a "shove all" room that way.)
This is another kitchen picture that has given me tons of inspiration! Wall of windows, big island, beams, and those hanging pendents.
I found a couple pendents that are very similar just a little bit bigger...and a creamy color. I think it will be fun to compare all my inspiration photos to the finished project.
On the left side of the room....right next to the mud room....the cabinets will be configured something like this....with cabinets up to the ceiling... the refrigerator sitting to the left. Thanks Melissa for your idea.
on the other side of the refrigerator- the dish pantry.
Inspiration taken from Heather Bullard. Thanks Heather for the idea (smile)
We will also have beams in this kitchen....something like this.
In fact the layout of my kitchen will be very much like this...just mirror image. We are also planning for hardwood floors.
Now for the final part of this kitchen. The wall where the cook top/hood will be.
(This picture was in my file...not sure who to give credit to.=(
Again some awesome inspiration for my kitchen back wall....between our builder and cabinet guys (thankful they don't look at me like I'm that "crazy lady")....they have some great ideas. Planning on subway tile on the back wall.
Still looking for some sconces ....always hunting.
Like I said earlier it will be interesting to see how my inspiration photos and real life come together.
When I gather inspiration photos I never expect the final project to look exactly the same...(what's the fun in that?) they are mostly a stepping off platform to help me refine what I have going on in my head.
Can't wait to see how this room turns out.
Happy Day!
You can see what the other half of the room will look like here.
I loved the simple lines of this fireplace surround.....this is the inspiration for our fireplace....can't wait to see how it turns out.
Do you ever feel inspirited by pictures you see on pinterest or in other blogs like The Inspired Room ....or just by the architecture around you. I do....I love to gather ideas .....it help to clear the "clutter" in my mind.
Tell me, where do look for inspiration?
Dinning area....the kitchen and dinning area are one big room.
I've had the table for awhile...it is one I used at flourish ....it is now at the cabin....and as soon as the house is ready we will be moving it to it's new home.
Love when I can use things I already have!
I would love to hear how you find inspiration for your home.
We found our-self with time to kill last Saturday waiting for our flight to leave San Diego.... just enough time to check out the USS midway and a few other shops around the area.
The USS Midway Museum is a maritime museum located in downtown San Diego.
Just a little date...before heading home. (wait we are empty "nesters"....we are always on a date.)
Happy Day
