For the love of the Bookmobile- a wonderful memory from my childhood in the 1960's
In towns not served by brick-and-mortar libraries, a visit from the local bookmobile was once an exciting and frequent event.
The bookmobile I remember had wooden shelves and seating, and traveled to smaller towns where library collections were small or even nonexistent. Back in the 1960’s...yes, I remember that bookmobile, as clear as day. During recess at school would usually be the time we would visit the bookmobile there was always lots of excitement on bookmobile day.
Link for picture here-
I would walk along the linoleum-paved aisle, inhaling the “booky” aroma while scanning the shelves for the perfect book, we were only permitted three, and then you’d get to the check-out desk at the end of the aisle, where you would hand over your library card, the librarian would stamp the due date in each book. It was always so much fun…a little like shopping....but for free.
Such fun memories-
Did you ever visit a bookmobile? Would love to hear your memories
This took place in Fairview Ut where I attend elementary school for a couple years- we lived about a 45 minute bus ride away in a tiny town called Indianola. (when I lived in Indianola there were only about 4 homes there.}
So going to the bookmobile was a big deal....for a 8 year old- I had never been inside a real store so yes, the bookmobile was a big deal!
Every-once in awhile when I smell a new book...memories come flooding back.
Happy Day
