Not that it's ever really cold here, {the kind of cold that freezes your lips closed} but it does get chilly. Sitting around a "camp" fire helps to warm those chilly nights-
It can be a wonderful evening, open to the Stars {instead of a roof or canopy over your head} enjoying roasted marshmallows, Dan's famous salmon or his roasted chicken.
It's great relaxation- "snuggling" up with a cozy blanket and watching the flames jump and crackle.
About this time of year I start yearning to lounge by a cozy fire with a good book and hot cocoa- because of the area we live in, come May we can no longer have outdoor "wood" burning fires. {because of the fire hazard}
This outdoor fireplace was easy to built- Using the "ruins" of a fallen building- see the cement border- that was all that was left of an old barn-
Using that as our border we filled in the area with dirt and mulch. Lined the whole outside area with trees- making our own private little hide away- Dan built the benches, we dug a hole lined it with brick and there you have it.... Our own little "camp fire getaway."
After May when we can no longer built an "wood" fire, we turn to our gas fireplace.
Fire and Water Side by Side
When the days warm up- this firebox gets used.
After a little research Dan was able to find just the right glass to use- then he set off to build it.
{have I mentioned before, Dan can build anything}
I love swimming late at night just to admire the fire's glow. It's such a wonderful focal point, not only when I'm outside but also when I'm inside.
I love the reflection of the fire in the water, when viewed from the dinning room the fireplace appears to float within the reflecting ripples. Magical.
I love a yard with a fireplace there's just something that says "home" about it. If you would love a fireplace in your yard but don't have a handy Dan or space or money- sitting around a blaze with friends and family doesn't have to involve either a campfire or a fireplace. There are some in-between options that will still add warmth to your backyard.
Here are some ideas that might help-
- Chiminea- This fireplace,usually round, features a vertical smoke vent.
- Firehouse-Enclosed but ventilated, a firehouse has windows, offering views of the flames from all angles.
- Fire Pit- Like the one pictured above- Often made up of wood-burning basin and stand, a fire pit resembles a raised campfire.
- Fire pit table-Table- height and equipped with a grilling grate, this type of fire pit is perfect for sitting to grill shish kabobs.
- Fire ring- Portable and best for camping trips, this container-type pit dresses up any campfire.
Here's to hoping you find a way to roast marshmallows. =}
